What a 3rd grade student learns in History
Grade 3 social studies is centered on community, local, and state history, with an introduction to fundamental geography, basic economics, civics, and early U.S. history. Students develop an understanding of how communities function, how government works at the local level, and how historical events shape their lives today.
The skills for the year

- 2Describe the roles and responsibilities of local government (mayor, city council, etc.)
- 3Explain the process of making local laws and rules
- 4Identify important symbols, landmarks, and holidays of the United States and state
- 5Locate their community, state, and the U.S. on maps and globes
- 6Interpret map symbols, keys, and compass rose for cardinal directions
- 7Use basic map scales and distances (miles) on maps
- 8Describe the cultural diversity and contributions of various groups to the community and state
- 9Describe changes over time in their local community and region (transportation, buildings, technology)
- 10Identify key historical figures, events, and Native American groups important to state and local history
- 11Explain the importance of rules, laws, and the concept of civic responsibility
- 12Describe the basic structure of local government and services
- 13Summarize how goods and services are produced and exchanged in the community
- 14Explain the concept of supply and demand with local examples
- 15Understand basic financial literacy concepts (saving, spending, wants vs needs)
- 16Explain the relationship between geographic features (rivers, mountains, lakes) and community development
- 17Discuss how people adapt to and modify their environment
- 18Interpret historical artifacts, documents, and oral histories related to local history
- 19Participate in a simple research project on a local historical topic using primary and secondary sources
