What a 3rd grade student learns in History

Grade 3 social studies is centered on community, local, and state history, with an introduction to fundamental geography, basic economics, civics, and early U.S. history. Students develop an understanding of how communities function, how government works at the local level, and how historical events shape their lives today.

  • 9Describe changes over time in their local community and region (transportation, buildings, technology)
  • 10Identify key historical figures, events, and Native American groups important to state and local history
  • 11Explain the importance of rules, laws, and the concept of civic responsibility
  • 12Describe the basic structure of local government and services
  • 13Summarize how goods and services are produced and exchanged in the community
  • 14Explain the concept of supply and demand with local examples
  • 15Understand basic financial literacy concepts (saving, spending, wants vs needs)
