What a 4th grade student learns in Math
Grade 4 math centers on developing fluency with multidigit arithmetic, understanding fraction concepts (including equivalence and operations), building foundations for geometry, and problem solving with measurement data.
The skills for the year
- 1Read, write, and compare whole numbers up to 1,000,000 using base-ten numerals, number names, and expanded form
- 2Round multidigit whole numbers to any place value (up to 1,000,000)
- 3Fluently add and subtract multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm
- 4Multiply a whole number of up to four digits by a one-digit whole number using the standard algorithm
- 5Multiply two two-digit numbers using strategies based on place value and properties of operations
- 6Find whole-number quotients and remainders with up to four-digit dividends and one-digit divisors using strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or illustrating equations
- 7Understand and explain the concept of factors and multiples (including identifying prime and composite numbers)
- 8Recognize and generate equivalent fractions; compare fractions with different numerators and denominators and justify with visual models
- 9Add and subtract fractions with like denominators (including mixed numbers); solve word problems involving these
- 10Understand fraction and whole number equivalence (e.g., 1/2 = 2/4; 7/1 = 7)
- 11Express fractions with denominators 10 and 100 as decimals and compare decimals to hundredths
- 12Multiply a fraction by a whole number (e.g., using visual fraction models or equations)
- 13Solve multi-step word problems (including problems with remainders and interpreting the remainder) using the four operations
- 14Interpret a multiplication equation as a comparison (e.g., interpret 4 x 6 = 24 as 24 is 4 times as many as 6)
- 15Measure and estimate lengths, masses, and liquid volumes using US customary units (in., ft., yd., lb., oz., c., pt., qt., gal., °F) and solve related word problems
- 16Use the four operations to solve word problems involving distances, intervals of time, volumes, masses, and money (using US customary units) including problems with simple fractions or decimals
- 17Read, interpret, and represent data using line plots with fractional units (1/2, 1/4, 1/8)
- 18Understand concepts of angle and measure angles in whole-number degrees using a protractor; solve addition and subtraction angle problems
- 19Classify two-dimensional shapes by properties of their lines (parallel, perpendicular) and angles (right, acute, obtuse)
- 20Identify and draw lines of symmetry in two-dimensional figures
