What a 5th grade student learns in Science
Fifth grade science focuses on deepening students' understanding of the structure and properties of matter, ecosystems and energy flow, Earth's systems and their interactions, and basic principles of physical and life sciences through observation, investigation, and evidence-based explanation.
The skills for the year
- 1Develop and use models to describe the structure of matter (atoms and molecules)
- 2Measure and identify physical and chemical properties of substances
- 3Plan and carry out investigations of mixing substances and resulting changes
- 4Analyze patterns in animal and plant life cycles, including reproduction and growth
- 5Construct explanations describing how matter cycles and energy flows in ecosystems (producers, consumers, decomposers)
- 6Evaluate solutions to protect Earth's resources and environment
- 7Explain the role of gravity in the solar system, including the motion of planets and the moon
- 8Use data to describe patterns of daily and seasonal changes in weather and climate
- 9Develop models to explain how Earth's geosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere interact
- 10Distinguish between renewable and nonrenewable resources and discuss conservation practices
- 11Gather and analyze evidence of Earth's changing surface over time (erosion, weathering, plate movement)
- 12Interpret data about water distribution and movement (water cycle, groundwater, runoff)
- 13Describe how organisms adapt to changing environments and how traits are inherited
- 14Communicate how humans impact Earth's systems and propose ways to reduce negative effects
- 15Use scientific practices to plan and conduct investigations, collect data, and draw conclusions from evidence
