What a 7th grade student learns in Math
Grade 7 mathematics centers on mastering operations with all rational numbers (including negatives), developing deep proportional reasoning and multi-step percent applications, and using expressions, equations, and inequalities to model problems. Students apply these ideas to geometry (circles, scale drawings, angles, surface area/volume) and introductory statistics/probability with sampling and compound events.

- 7Determine whether quantities are proportional and identify the constant of proportionality from tables, graphs, and equations
- 8Represent proportional relationships with equations of the form y = kx
- 9Solve multi-step real-world percent problems (tax, tip, discount, markup, simple interest, percent increase/decrease)
- 10Interpret scale drawings and compute actual lengths and areas from a given scale
- 11Construct triangles and other geometric figures given side/angle conditions and determine uniqueness
- 12Describe two-dimensional figures resulting from plane slices of three-dimensional solids
- 13Know and apply formulas for circumference and area of circles in real-world problems
- 14Solve problems involving area of composite 2-D figures and surface area/volume of right prisms and composite 3-D figures
- 15Write and solve equations for unknown angles using complementary, supplementary, vertical, and adjacent relationships
- 16Use random samples to draw valid inferences about a population
- 17Informally compare two populations using measures of center and variability from samples
- 18Approximate experimental probabilities and develop theoretical probability models for simple events
- 19Find probabilities of compound events using organized lists, tables, tree diagrams, and simulations
