What a 8th grade student learns in Spelling

Grade 8 spelling centers on morphological analysis of Greek and Latin roots and affixes to spell complex multisyllabic and academic words accurately, alongside mastery of advanced patterns, homophones, and self-correction strategies for precise formal writing.

The skills for the year

  • 1Spell words formed from common Greek roots (bio, chron, graph, hydr, log, meter, path, phil, phon, photo, scope, tele, therm)
  • 2Spell words formed from common Latin roots (aud, dict, ject, port, rupt, scrib/script, spect, struct, tract, vid/vis)
  • 3Apply advanced Greek/Latin prefixes (anti-, circum-, contra-, inter-, micro-, multi-, poly-, sub-, super-, trans-) to base words
  • 4Apply meaning-changing suffixes (-able/-ible, -ance/-ence, -ant/-ent, -ion/-tion/-sion, -ity, -ive, -ology, -ous/-ious) correctly
  • 5Spell the limited set of words ending in -cede, -ceed, and -sede
  • 6Apply suffix-addition rules (drop final e, change y to i, double final consonant) to multisyllabic bases
  • 7Differentiate and correctly spell advanced homophones and confusable pairs (affect/effect, principal/principle, stationary/stationery, complement/compliment, elicit/illicit)
  • 8Spell multisyllabic words by analyzing syllable division, open/closed syllables, and stress patterns
  • 9Spell words containing silent consonants and irregular letter combinations (kn, gn, wr, mb, bt, gh, ps)
  • 10Form and spell irregular plurals, compound-noun plurals, and possessives of foreign-origin nouns
  • 11Use etymology and word-origin knowledge to determine spelling of unfamiliar academic terms
  • 12Spell grade-level domain-specific vocabulary from science, social studies, and literature with accuracy
  • 13Master high-frequency frequently misspelled words (accommodate, consensus, definitely, embarrass, judgment, maintenance, occurrence, privilege, recommend, separate, supersede)
  • 14Proofread extended writing independently to locate and correct spelling errors using multiple strategies
  • 15Critically evaluate and override incorrect spell-checker suggestions in digital compositions
