What a 1st grade student learns in Grammar
Grade 1 grammar focuses on developing foundational sentence-level skills, using standard conventions in speaking and writing, and expanding command of basic grammar structures and vocabulary.
The skills for the year
- 1Print all upper- and lowercase letters legibly
- 2Use common nouns and proper nouns; capitalize proper nouns, including names and dates
- 3Use singular and plural nouns with appropriate regular endings (-s, -es)
- 4Recognize and use possessive nouns (e.g., the girl's hat)
- 5Use personal, possessive, and indefinite pronouns (e.g., I, me, my, they, them, their, anyone)
- 6Use frequently occurring verbs and past, present, and future verb tenses; form regular verbs correctly
- 7Use frequently occurring adjectives to describe nouns
- 8Use frequently occurring conjunctions to join words and simple sentences (and, but, or, so, because)
- 9Distinguish between statements, questions, commands, and exclamations
- 10Capitalize the first word in a sentence and the pronoun ‘I’
- 11Use end punctuation for sentences (period, question mark, exclamation point)
- 12Use commas in dates and to separate single words in a list
- 13Expand, combine, and rearrange simple sentences (e.g., join two simple sentences with and/but/or)
- 14Use articles (a, an, the) correctly in sentences
- 15Identify and use frequently occurring prepositions (to, from, in, out, on, off, for, of, by, with)
- 16Determine the meaning of unknown words using context clues, affixes, and inflectional endings (-s, -ed, -ing)
- 17Use conventional spelling for grade-appropriate words and phonetically spell untaught words
