What a 1st grade student learns in Science
Grade 1 science develops foundational skills in observing, describing, and investigating the natural world, emphasizing hands-on exploration in physical, life, and earth science topics.
The skills for the year
- 1Ask and answer questions about the natural world using simple investigations
- 2Observe and describe properties of objects and materials (color, texture, hardness, flexibility)
- 3Compare and sort objects by their observable properties
- 4Identify materials things are made of (wood, metal, plastic, etc.) and reason about their uses
- 5Plan and conduct simple tests to explore effects of different materials in a given situation
- 6Identify patterns in weather (temperature, precipitation, wind, and sunlight)
- 7Describe seasonal changes and how they affect living things
- 8Gather and interpret information about the sun's effect on Earth's surface (warming, light)
- 9Make observations of plants and animals to describe patterns of what they need to survive
- 10Describe how young animals are similar to, but not exactly like, their parents
- 11Recognize that different plants and animals live in different places and habitats
- 12Sort and describe living and nonliving things in the environment
- 13Use tools (hand lens, ruler, thermometer) to gather information about objects and weather
- 14Record observations with drawings, numbers, or simple graphs
- 15Communicate findings about investigations using pictures and words
