What a Kindergarten student learns in Reading & Literature
Kindergarten Reading & Literature centers on building foundational print, phonological, and phonics skills so students can begin reading emergent texts, while using prompting and support to comprehend literary stories by identifying key details, characters, settings, events, and making simple comparisons.
The skills for the year
- 1Demonstrate print concepts (left-to-right/top-to-bottom directionality, spoken words as written words, spaces between words)
- 2Name all uppercase and lowercase letters of the alphabet
- 3Recognize and produce rhyming words
- 4Count, pronounce, blend, and segment syllables in spoken words
- 5Blend and segment onsets and rimes of single-syllable spoken words
- 6Isolate and pronounce the initial, medial vowel, and final sounds (phonemes) in CVC words
- 7Add or substitute individual sounds in simple one-syllable words to make new words
- 8Demonstrate basic one-to-one letter-sound correspondences for consonants and short vowels
- 9Read common high-frequency sight words (e.g., the, of, to, you, she, my, is, are, do)
- 10Distinguish similarly spelled words by identifying differing letter sounds
- 11Read emergent-reader texts with purpose and understanding
- 12With prompting and support, ask and answer questions about key details in a story
- 13With prompting and support, retell familiar stories including key details
- 14With prompting and support, identify characters, settings, and major events in a story
- 15Ask and answer questions about unknown words in a literary text
- 16Recognize common types of texts such as storybooks and poems
