First letter sounds: s, a, t, p, i, n

Six letter sounds that make real words right away. Your child says each sound, traces the letter, then reads six first words.

Have Arbor plan your child’s whole year. Like this sheet, every lesson tells you what to say and do, step by step, at your child’s level. Free for 14 days.

How to use this in 5 minutes

  1. Say the sound. Say, “This is s. It says /s/, like the start of sun. Your turn.” Point to each picture as you go.
  2. Trace it. Say, “Start at the yellow dot and say /s/ while you trace.” Two traces, then one on their own.
  3. Read a word. Say, “Touch each dot and say its sound: /s/ /a/ /t/. Now slide and say it fast. Sat!”

Tip. Keep each sound short and clean: /t/, not “tuh.” A clipped sound blends into a word far more easily.

Answer key

First letter sounds: s, a, t, p, i, n

Say it, then trace it

  • Ss says /s/, as in sun
  • Aa says /a/, as in apple
  • Tt says /t/, as in tent
  • Pp says /p/, as in pig
  • Ii says /i/, as in igloo
  • Nn says /n/, as in nest

Touch each dot, then slide and read

  • sat: /s/ /a/ /t/, sat
  • pin: /p/ /i/ /n/, pin
  • tap: /t/ /a/ /p/, tap
  • nap: /n/ /a/ /p/, nap
  • sit: /s/ /i/ /t/, sit
  • pan: /p/ /a/ /n/, pan

If it’s hard

  • If a sound won’t stick, give it a motion, like a snake’s hiss for /s/ or a tap on the table for /t/. Moving helps a young child remember.
  • If blending stalls, say the first two sounds together, /sa/, then add the last: /sa/ /t/, sat.
