What a 2nd grade student learns in Reading & Literature
Grade 2 Reading & Literature centers on building fluent decoding of multisyllabic and irregular words while deepening comprehension of stories and poetry through analysis of character responses, story structure, central messages, and point of view in grade 2–3 complexity texts.
The skills for the year
- 1Distinguish long and short vowels in regularly spelled one-syllable words
- 2Apply spelling-sound correspondences for common vowel teams
- 3Decode regularly spelled two-syllable words with long vowels
- 4Decode words with common prefixes and suffixes
- 5Recognize and read grade-appropriate irregularly spelled words
- 6Read grade-level text orally with accuracy, appropriate rate, and expression
- 7Use context to confirm or self-correct word recognition while reading
- 8Ask and answer who, what, where, when, why, and how questions about key details in literature
- 9Recount stories (including fables and folktales from diverse cultures) and determine the central message, lesson, or moral
- 10Describe how characters respond to major events and challenges
- 11Describe overall story structure, including how the beginning introduces the story and the ending concludes the action
- 12Acknowledge differences in characters’ points of view (including using different voices for dialogue)
- 13Use information from illustrations and words to demonstrate understanding of characters, setting, or plot
- 14Describe how words and phrases (regular beats, alliteration, rhymes, repeated lines) supply rhythm and meaning in a story, poem, or song
- 15Compare and contrast two or more versions of the same story by different authors or from different cultures
- 16Read and comprehend literature, including stories and poetry, in the grades 2–3 text complexity band
